Routes worth checking

Based on your answers
01

Check whether donation fits

Habitat ReStore offers free pickup for accepted larger donations. Staff confirm acceptance. Used mattresses, sleeper sofas and particle-board furniture are excluded.

Confirm your city pickup eligibility

A Knoxville postal address or ZIP does not establish city collection eligibility. Check the address lookup or call 311 before relying on curbside service.

Use the city address lookup ↗

Keep these options in your notes

Copy your selected answers, routes and cautions before checking the official instructions. Copying does not send a request or confirm collection.

For chemicals, fuel, connected equipment, unusual contamination or other specialist materials, ask the responsible public office or an established specialist. This tool covers ordinary furniture only.

Before using a route

Use the notes for the route you are considering. Confirm eligibility with the organization first.

Follow through on City collection

Sorting out a room or a mixed pile? Check each kind of item before treating the whole load as furniture.

  • Count the bulky items. The City allows up to five per week. Its rules say none will be collected if more than five are set out at once.
  • Check unusually large or heavy pieces first. The City says pianos, exercise machines, items over six feet long and items too heavy for two sanitation workers may not qualify. Give 311 the item type and approximate size before moving it outside; do not assume an ordinary furniture route covers it.
  • Separate renovation debris. Removed kitchen or bathroom cabinets, doors, flooring and lumber are not eligible for bulky collection. Ask about the appropriate disposal route rather than adding them to a furniture pickup.
  • Keep brush separate. Yard waste mixed with trash or other items does not qualify for bulky pickup. Extra garbage bags and cardboard boxes are not bulky items either.
  1. Check the official item and placement rules before setting anything out. Ask 311 about an uncertain item.
  2. Note when you placed your bulky alert. The City asks you to allow up to two business days.
  3. If qualifying items remain after that period, follow the City’s missed-pickup instructions or call 311.

Check before loading for a County center

  • Confirm that the residency and waste-origin rules cover your load. Ask the County about uncertain cases.
  • Check the amount: nonrecyclable household waste is limited to one standard 5×8 pickup load per household per day. Heaping loads are turned away.
  • Check the chosen center’s accepted materials and opening information. Centers can close early. Compare the published County and City drop-off hours before planning a weekend trip.
  • Plan transport and unloading you can safely manage. If you need lifting help, use the quote-preparation checklist.

Keep a fallback for donation

Check furniture condition and donation exclusions before choosing this route.

  • Still checking? Confirm acceptance, collection method and timing directly. A pickup request is not confirmed collection.
  • Arrangements agreed? Keep the details in your notes. ReStore staff still make the final acceptance decision.
  • Declined or unavailable in time? Revisit the route choices for your address, load and lifting needs. For a deadline, use the move-out plan.

Can you donate this furniture in Knoxville?

Check the exact item and its condition before planning a trip or pickup. A charity accepting furniture does not mean it accepts every sofa, bed or cabinet.

Have a glass table top or mirror? Check the item-specific questions below before choosing donation or recycling.

Knoxville Habitat ReStore

ReStore lists furniture in good working condition and offers free pickup for larger donations. Its exclusions include sleeper sofas, used mattresses and box springs, and press-board or particle-board furniture. Staff make the final acceptance decision.

Clearing children’s furniture? Its list also excludes used bunk beds and baby items, including cribs. Describe the exact item before treating a furniture donation as accepted.

Read ReStore’s acceptance and pickup rules

KARM Stores

KARM asks for complete furniture in good condition. Minor scratches or dents can be acceptable; significant tears, stains, mildew, water damage and strong cigarette or pet odors are not. It does not accept used mattresses. Its guidelines offer free donation pickup for larger items.

Read KARM’s donation guidelines

Confirm what will actually happen

For nursery furniture or children’s beds, note the manufacturer and model if available and check CPSC’s recall notices before offering the item for reuse. Follow any applicable recall instructions; good appearance alone does not establish that an item is safe. CPSC’s used-product guidance warns against passing on hazardous or noncompliant products, and against selling broken, wobbly or incomplete nursery furniture.

  • Describe the exact piece, including any sleeper or reclining mechanism, damage and missing parts. Ask about anything the published list does not settle.
  • Confirm whether your address is covered, where items must be placed, who handles carrying or stairs, and which date is agreed. “Free pickup” alone does not answer those questions.
  • Keep accepted and declined items separate in your item list. Do not assume one accepted piece means the whole load is accepted.

If donation does not fit, return to public disposal options or use the quote comparison worksheet to plan paid removal. A paid collection described as donation pickup is not automatically a free charity collection or a guarantee that the items will be donated.

Glass table tops and mirrors: check the exact item

A glass-top table, a framed mirror and a loose glass panel need different descriptions. Note whether the glass is attached, loose, cracked or broken in your item and access list.

  • Recycling: The City’s glass guidance covers bottles and jars. Do not assume a table top or mirror belongs in that collection. Ask 311 about your exact item and its condition before taking it to a drop-off center or setting it out.
  • Donation: ReStore’s donation list excludes unframed glass and mirrors. Describe the complete piece; that exclusion does not confirm acceptance of a framed mirror or glass-top table.
  • Removal: Ask who will handle any glass parts and what preparation is needed before agreeing to collection. Do not detach or break glass just to complete your checklist.

Plan your next step

Need someone to carry
the furniture out?

Start with the items, stairs, access and timing. Keep these details together in your project plan.

  1. Copy the item and access checklist.
  2. List anything that needs checking: accepted items, location, carrying and disposal.
  3. Check what the quote includes and note which details are still unconfirmed.

For a firm deadline

Write down your deadline and which arrangements are actually confirmed. Keep a fallback if donation or public collection will not fit your timing.

About & privacy

Planning guides from Clearout Compass

Clearout Compass publishes furniture-disposal planning guides for people in Knoxville and Knox County. The public-service and donation organizations cited in these guides operate separately. Source links do not mean they participate in or endorse this site.

The disposal tool runs on your device; its answers are not saved. Keep completed worksheets in your own notes. Linked public-service and donation organizations handle any information you give them under their own policies.

We count page visits to understand which guides are useful, without tracking cookies. These totals do not contain names, full referring web addresses or IP addresses. Technical service providers may keep separate security logs.

Existing private request pages

New requests are closed. If you already have a private request link, it remains the access key for that record. Anyone with the link can access it, so keep it private. Clearout Compass can review your request. No details have been sent to a removal business.

You can use your private page to edit or cancel an active request. Cancelling removes your request details. Requests expire 30 days after your last update or confirmation; expired details are removed when the request is next checked. A limited record of closure may remain temporarily. Copies in backups and security logs may be retained separately.
