Knoxville · After furniture delivery

Boxes, foam and wrapping need a separate plan.

A new sofa or bed can leave more than an old piece to remove. Sort the delivery packaging by material before choosing a collection or drop-off route.

These are City of Knoxville recycling checks. A private apartment or business collection service may have different instructions; confirm with the person who manages your collection.

Keep the furniture and its packaging separate in your cleanup description.

Check each material

Do not put the whole package in one recycling bin.

Before discarding the packaging: check your order’s return and damage-report instructions. Ask the seller whether boxes, inserts, labels or photos need to be kept, especially while a delivery problem is unresolved. Follow the instructions for your own purchase rather than assuming every seller or delivery method has the same rules.

Cardboard boxes

The City’s drop-off rules list flattened cardboard. Accepted recyclables must be clean, dry and loose in the bins. Separate the box from its foam inserts and wrapping; a cardboard outer box does not establish that everything inside is recyclable.

Foam blocks and packing peanuts

City drop-off centers exclude Styrofoam. The City’s specialty recycling guide also excludes foam packaging from its ordinary recycling instructions. Its separate option for clean foam food trays does not accept packing foam or large foam pieces. Do not treat those as interchangeable materials.

Plastic wrapping, bubble wrap and air pillows

Plastic bags and film do not belong in City recycling drop-off bins. The specialty guide includes bubble wrap and air pillows in its film exclusions. It advises checking directly with stores about current plastic-bag recycling; that is not confirmation that a store accepts your particular furniture wrap.

UT’s public recycling drop-off lists bubble wrap and plastic film for bins specifically marked “Plastic Film and Bags,” not its regular plastic bins. It excludes food-contaminated film and packing tape. Check your exact material and confirm current opening times with UT before travelling. This film option does not establish acceptance of foam blocks or packing peanuts.

For an uncertain material, use the City’s What Goes Where lookup or ask 311 before setting out or transporting it. Describe the material and amount. Do not assume a recycling symbol or an accepted cardboard box settles the route for every piece.

Before delivery day

Confirm who takes the packaging.

  • Ask the seller: does your specific delivery include unpacking and removing the boxes, foam and wrap? Confirm separately from assembly and old-furniture removal.
  • Describe what will remain: list boxes, loose foam and wrapping separately. If asking for paid collection, confirm whether the quote covers those materials as well as the furniture.
  • Check the collection point: in a managed building, ask where packaging may be stored or placed. Do not rely on space beside a shared bin without permission.
  • Keep the answer: note who agreed to remove each material, the date and anything you must confirm. If the delivery does not include cleanup, settle the material-specific route before relying on it.

For a separate paid collection, compare the complete quoted work. A furniture pickup price does not by itself establish that packaging cleanup is included.

Still need to clear the old furniture?

Use the replacement-delivery questions to coordinate the old piece and the new delivery. Then check furniture disposal and donation options or prepare an item and access list.
